Let's call it enlightened self-interest. Murdoch is the heaviest of heavy hitters and I appreciate having the roots of this exposed, as is your habit, Mr. Colby. Let us pray that even the densest cohort of the collective people of the United States act accordingly.

Paul Walters's avatar

Solid, sound article. Thank you

David Eichler's avatar

But it only happened after Fox had to pay a major settlement. If this hadn’t threatened to hurt their bottom line, they would have let it go. Hell, they would have probably let Ailes’s transgressions go if it came to that. There is no journalistic principle going on here, and the only business principle is making as much money as possible.

Colby Hall's avatar

that's a point i make in the column you apparently only skimmed?

David Eichler's avatar

Except that your take is contradictory. On the one hand you acknowledge that Fox did it for economic reasons, because it had been sued before, and on the other you call Fox's action "principled." Fox has no principles. The only principles involved here were those of the law, which influenced Fox to act in the way it did.

Hugo D's avatar

So it’s only principle is to abide by the law, then

David Eichler's avatar

The law is the only principle at play in this matter. And Fox only abided by the law after being shown that not doing so had real consequences.

Rhesa Olsen's avatar

Not nice, Colby. In a long article, it is easy for ALL of us to miss something. U should be happy that u HAD a supporter.

EBrian's avatar

Apparently he’s not glad David is here

Averil Celestain's avatar

There is the option to listen.

David Eichler's avatar

I didn't miss anything, but my original comment wasn't as clear as possible.

Colby Hall's avatar

Apologies! I appreciate your feedback and was only trying to point out that I agreed with you. I could have been a bit more judicious in how I communicated it!

Democratalltheway!'s avatar

Wow, aren’t we overly sensitive.

Professor Douglas Brooks's avatar

Actually you praise Fox for this firing on several occasions and more than suggest that they were acting with integrity. Read your own words. Unfortunately, I wasted my time doing as much.

Wayne Stiles's avatar

Yes, let's continue to castigate the Network of Trump, even when they do something right (perhaps for the wrong reason). We must accept small positive movements from these entrenched people rather than throwing it back in their face. Not minimizing past failures and outrages, but we must take small steps towards reinforcing decisions that are at least in the right direction.

David Eichler's avatar

They did not do something "right," that is, on principle. They acted out of pure financial interest because they had been successfully sued in the past. The end result might have been a good one, but not because Fox has any principles. The principles at work here are those of the law.

Fourth Amendment's avatar

If your take is that Fox is the network of Trump, you have serious perception problems. Murdock despises Trump, and all that he stands for. That you can't see this is telling. You might get want to do a bottom blow, retake some samples, and recalibrate your reality gage.

David Eichler's avatar

What is telling is making unfounded assumptions about the views of people you don't know. Most right-wing elites despise Trump. The problem is that they despise the left even more, and so will grudgingly stick by Trump. Even those senators who voted to convict Trump still try to pander to MAGA as much as they can. Hell, I am sure a fair amount of people in Trump's cabinet, like Rubio, despise Trump, but they stick by him either out of ideology or their personal interest. You seem to forget that Murdoch has made millions off of Trump, which is his other big motivation to help keep Trump around.

Fourth Amendment's avatar

Do you ever truly know someone? The point is that public statements and actions speak loud enough if you're listening and honest, but boomers continue to take the bait. We might even be arguing for the same principles.

The writing is on the wall, Fox is a sophisticated psyop. Just watch the b-roll footage accentuating foolishness at the same time they glaze the administration in word. Pictures are powerful, and serve as video candy and placation to the elites. Once go looking for it, and catch them doing it, you can't unsee it.

Thanks, it's nice to know that Trump has never lied. Enjoy the high gas prices and the food shortages to come from his "police action." Like Trump, you must not have served because to deny the widow of a USAF death benefits after her husband was killed in his "ego war" is a travesty.

Thank you Rick. My thoughts exactly. I was waiting (hoping actually), that Fox News would not settle, and instead drag the case into a criminal court where a discovery process would force the states, and Dominion and Smartmatic, into having their machines looked at. A process that to this day hasn't happened...

What teally irks me is when some snarky leftist types a remark to me, specifically to me, but then BLOCKS me so i cannot respond.

Argh. I don’t hate the Left, I despise it.

Substack should amend their algorithm so that whenever a person replies to a specific comment, they cannot then block that same person.

The leftists will object. Fine.

Shut up, stop slandering and lying about people, and no one will waste a reply.

A list of the key people at Staples State Capital, who owned Dominion in 2020, could double up as the social register of former Carlyle Group and Cerberus alums.

Apparently they wanted their forever wars back.

Beautiful Loser's avatar

No one… NO ONE…… will ever convince me that 2020 election was legitimate. Please don’t give me the nonsense line, Every court ruled against Trump. Nah…. They didn’t. They all refused to even look at the evidence…with the bullshit line that none of the plaintiffs had standing. Earlier this year, the SCOTUS ruled that they all,did in 2020. So, the courts simply used that line so that they would not have to rule on the evidence…. Which they didn’t want to do. 81 million votes. Just fucking stop it. Trump won’t. The dems cheated everyone knows it.

Becky's avatar

That means that all of the Republicans who won in that election should not be in office since the election was illegitimate

Rhesa Olsen's avatar

Touche’, Becky.

MAGAs r all one-sided *until something affects them personally.

John W's avatar

You conveniently ignore all the votes counted that only registered a vote for President (Biden) and nothing down ballot.

John Merrick's avatar

John W. - Are you stupid? If the Democrats could fix an election they would make everything down ballot go democratic. They would leave nothing blank. Regrettably many down ballot voters went for the republican candidate. Which proves the election was not rigged. Your guy won in 2024 and is in the process of destroying America.

Beautiful Loser's avatar

Leaving the down-ballot votes blank makes them portable. Remember, all the identifying info is on the envelopes, which don’t get retained. Votes with no down ballot votes can be moved to any precinct and counted when needed. Sure sign of fraud. You knew that. Right?

Rick's avatar

Silly man. The blank ballots are hastily created. Not enough time for down ballot penciling. Just the top 2 or 3 positions.

If anyone here is stupid, it would be you.

Blank ballots are held in reserve.

John Merrick's avatar

Becky- Way to logical for your basic maga moron.

Rick's avatar

It more likely means most democrats elected are frauds.

We ate in favor of transparency…. You are not. Why?

Rick's avatar

Are you even 18 yet?

Rick's avatar

No it means the process should be improved.

Paul Walters's avatar

My God, it was six years ago. 64 times the courts ruled. Enough already ! This whole debacle resembles a small country in Africa squabbling over the spoils with Mike Lindale eggin them on.

John W's avatar

Paul you've been fooled by the useful idiots. The courts did not rule on any evidence. Period. They ruled only on standing. And then SCOTUS told them they got it wrong.

Rick's avatar

The Courts for the most part declined to consider the cases s. That is hardly a “ruling .”

This election fraud by mailing ballots is gunna blow up in your lefty faces.

And no amount of makeup will make you look good.

Averil Celestain's avatar

Leave the African Continent out of this please.

Paul Walters's avatar

smartalek smartalek's avatar

Why?

John W's avatar

Well Paul you seem to be channeling what BSNOW and CNN spew. The courts did not rule on the evidence. They ruled that plaintiffs had no standing. There's a big difference. SCOTUS has since ruled that they did in fact have standing.

Please keep up.

Gary's avatar

Rhesa Olsen's avatar

Will u agree that Musk & tRUMP stole the 2024 election, “Beautiful” Loser?

Lori Doyle's avatar

So the Dems hadn’t figured out how to steal a presidential election in 2016, did figure it out in 2020, but forgot again in 2024? Wow, I’ve got a bridge I’d like to sell you, Loser.

Sean's avatar

I think we should just all pause and acknowledge the irony of this individual claiming the election was rigged and their username is “beautiful loser”. Like, you it was rigged so you lost but maybe you just manifested it?

Beautiful Loser's avatar

That’s hilarious. Really. How long did you have to sit at your keyboard in your mom’s basement to come up with that?

Dennis Benoit's avatar

Why bother.

Stevens's avatar

If that idiocy is accurate, for one to believe

the b.s. about Trump losing the 2020 election, that means there was a

massive election/national security failure that occurred under his watch.

Because the two elections he won took place under Democratic presidents.

Beautiful Loser's avatar

If you are stupid enough to believe Trump was in control of the intelligence apparatus at any time during his 1st administration, you really haven’t been paying attention…

Stevens's avatar

Shoot, thst right, I forgot, it was the Derp State - sorry, Deep State, of course. How could I forget that, right?

Sure the Democrats are so brilliant that they pulled off an election heist.

Mr Trump called the Republican primaries in 2016 rigged without any evidence.

He’s is a great con man but somehow only for his sycophants .

Diana Shellenberger's avatar

Fox only learned its lesson about broadcasting lies with a nearly $1 billion judgment. They’re likely to lose the Smartmatic case, too. Money always matters more than the truth to these people.

Ray's avatar

There was no judgment. It was a settlement.

Diana Shellenberger's avatar

No admission of wrongdoing, except for a $787 million “donation.” Everyone sees these things as the face savers they are.

KRT's avatar

Not sure why you're giving Fox News any credit whatsoever. They got rid of her purely for liability and financial issues. You also mentioned that in the past you have given them credit when credit is due. Nothing Fox does deserves any credit. They are a primary reason why MAGA is so strong.

Satchmo Girl's avatar

Plain & simple: Bartiromo bit the hand that fed her. She showed gross disloyalty to Fox & got what she deserves. Anyone thinking of employing her should think twice.

LStrong's avatar

Bartiromo’s alleged behavior in this situation reminds me of an addicted person going back to the substance that previously caused them problems. Surely she’s aware of Fox’s large settled lawsuit payout that resulted from the network’s previous airing of Trump regime’s spurious claims. I wonder, did she think that she was such a big deal at Fox that she could get away with pulling the same stunt?

Chris Vail's avatar

When Bloomberg acquired Business Week Bartiromo was the first one he fired.

Fourth Amendment's avatar

Do what? Have we've even seen the fruits of her labor?

Laura Austin's avatar

Trump is a terrible president who we elected twice. Just this week he said his Iran fiasco was “small potatoes”, just one example of his disregard for American lives and economic well being. There is no room in this reply to list other serious examples. His losing the 2020 election was, unfortunately, not the end of his political career. The fact that some want to still debate it boggles my mind in light of all the damage he has done to you and me, his constituents, as president.

Laura Austin's avatar

lol bloviating is a good word to apply btw

Laura Austin's avatar

It’s not my mind, it’s his words that form his messages, that form the illegal actions that follow. He needs to go.

Fourth Amendment's avatar

Micro-parsing and then bloviating about what someone like Trump says is a complete waste of time, particularly in the face of what he has actually accomplished. Maybe you've heard...Talk is cheap. What can talk about talk be worth?

Laura Austin's avatar

Asking me to disassociate his words from his misguided, illegal, and immoral actions is indicative of the segment of the U.S. Trump electorate that is willing to also disassociate from the words of the constitution, international laws, federal judges’ decisions, and federal agency regulations that Trump’s actions have defied. In our country words matter.

Fourth Amendment's avatar

So in your mind before Trump showed up on the scene, everything was just fine.

The judges were not political. There was no corruption. Corporations didn't own our congressman and presidents weren't just drug around by their f****** nose rings. This is a world that I refuse to f****** live in with people like you. Look around lady. The Communist manifesto is alive and well, and all you can do is repeat myopic tropes from the internet that you haven't even thought of yourself.

Your clamshell has been opened and the only person you have the emotional and intellectual imagination to criticize is this one person who's decided to change things for the better and all you can do is tap dance around technicalities and point in general directions and scoff. You're being dishonest, and you're coming off like someone that has been told by people on the internet that you have an extra grind without actually having an ax to grind.

Fourth Amendment's avatar

I present to you exhibit A.

There’s only one reason they declined to cover Trump’s election BS and fire Bartiromo. $786 million.

Rhesa Olsen's avatar

Bartiroma USED to be well-respected when she was a Financial Reporter. Idk what happened to her ability to be a journalist after that bc she no longer reported the facts, just made up stuff.

Roger Ailes wholly created her "money Honey" persona, people took posturing for actual serious talent. She then followed her buddy Ailes over to his network that he modeled after the Soviet propaganda stations, he and Nixon wanted to duplicate. John Lynch's avatar

Something something millionaire working for billionaires…$786 million is close enough with one more to go. Besides Trump never lies, we all know that, right?

Difficult to call this piece serious in any way as the author, regardless of hundreds of thousands of illegal ballots being identified in multiple states, still refers to Trump’s claims about the 2020 election being rigged, as it most certainly was, as “baseless.” If all this guy has is recycled trad media bullshit, then nothing he writes is worth reading.
